The Problem With Amazon Wigs

You found a wig on Amazon. It looks cute, the price is great—why not buy it? Before you click that purchase button, save the wig in your cart and read this article.

Amazon is fantastic for many things. You can find almost anything you need, and it often arrives quickly. However, there are some items I never buy from Amazon, and wigs are at the top of that list—unless it's for a Halloween costume. Why? Because Amazon and other online stores often have misleading descriptions and photos, making it extremely difficult to buy a quality wig, especially for first-time buyers.

Many photos on Amazon wig listings are fake or stolen from other wig companies. These images often show people flaunting their bio hair or wigs from other brands, not the listed wig. When buying wigs online, it's essential to look at reviews and see real photos of the product.

Aside from scrutinizing photos, you also need to carefully read the listing descriptions. As a first-time wig buyer, you might see a listing that claims the wig is made of human hair. You’ve done your research and know human hair is good, so what's the issue? The problem isn’t with Amazon; it’s the lack of regulation regarding "human hair." If a wig contains any percentage of human hair, it can be listed as such. This means a synthetic wig with just 1% human hair can be marketed as a human hair wig. Many people are unaware of this, making such listings highly misleading.

Another major issue is that Amazon wigs often don’t look natural. These wigs typically feature low-quality hair and caps, which prevent them from achieving a natural appearance. The caps are not designed to fit well, leading to discomfort and a poor fit. Many cheap wigs lack lace fronts, which are crucial for a seamless blend between your forehead and the wig. Some are advertised with a fake scalp for a natural look, but they often resemble hair sprouting from a visible piece of plastic.

After working with high-end wigs I have learned that you get what you pay for in the wig world. If you spend $30 on an Amazon wig, you are going to get a $30 Amazon wig. It will not be the same as a $3,000 wig. The best thing you can do before buying a wig is to talk with a wig expert/consultant/stylist. They can help you find the right wig that will best suit your needs. You don't have to figure out wigs by yourself. You are not alone in your hair loss journey!
